Gum Rejuvenation

What is Gum Rejuvenation?

Gum rejuvenation refers to treatment of gum recession along the gumline. When gum recession occurs, the root surfaces of the tooth becomes exposed. This means that tooth decay and sensitivity with other problems can affect the teeth along the gumline and beneath it which can lead to loss of tooth. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness.

What is the CHAO Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST®)?

Also know as Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation, this is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation is scalpel and suture free. Dr. Shelyan is one of the few certified dentists in Los Angeles that uses Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation. All of the tools and techniques used to perform the CHAO PST® is patented by Dr. Chao himself who has invented this procedure.

How does Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation differ from traditional gum grafting?

Traditional gum recession treatments involve removal of gum tissue from the palate as a donor tissue in order to graft the receded gumline. This soft tissue would be sutured in place and would join with existing gum tissue as it heals in 8 weeks.

While this traditional grafting treatment is effective, comparable results with better patient experience can be achieved through the CHAO PST®.

How is Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation performed?

During the Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation, the doctor makes a small hole above the receded area. Through this “Pinhole”, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue and move the tissue over the recession.

There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue.
